About the AFOQT

What is the AFOQT?

The Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT) is a standardized test similar to the SAT or ACT, but with additional sections unique to the Air Force. It's required for anyone seeking to become an officer in the U.S. Air Force, whether through Officer Training School (OTS), Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), or the Air Force Academy.

Who Takes the AFOQT?

  • Candidates for Officer Training School (OTS)
  • Air Force ROTC cadets (typically during sophomore or junior year)
  • Applicants to the U.S. Air Force Academy
  • Current enlisted airmen seeking to become officers
  • Civilians pursuing Air National Guard or Reserve officer positions

Test Structure

The AFOQT consists of 12 timed subtests totaling approximately 3.5 hours. The test measures aptitudes in verbal and quantitative areas, as well as specific knowledge areas like aviation and spatial awareness crucial for pilot and navigator positions.

Composite Scores:

  • Pilot: Aviation, Instrument, Table Reading, Math, Block Counting
  • Combat Systems Officer: Word Knowledge, Math, Table Reading, Block Counting
  • Air Battle Manager: Verbal, Math, Table Reading
  • Academic Aptitude: Verbal Analogies, Word Knowledge, Reading, Math
  • Verbal: All verbal sections
  • Quantitative: Math Knowledge and Arithmetic Reasoning

Scoring & Retakes

Scores range from 1-99 (percentile rankings). Minimum scores vary by career field and commissioning source. You can retake the AFOQT only once after 150 days. A third attempt requires a waiver, making preparation crucial for your first attempt.
